  • FAQ:
        • Q. Will the water and athletic drinks be passed out in paper cups or in botles?
        • A. At the aid stations, both water and Gatorade will be in paper cups. At the start / finish, water will be in paper cups, PowerAde in plastic bottles.
        • Q. Do you recycle / re-use?
        • A. Yes. Please dispose of cups and bottles in our marked recycling boxes. Please deposit banana peels and other food waste in our marked composting boxes.
        • Q. Where will drinks be passed out?
        • A. At the start / midpoint / finish at Fletcher's Cove, and at each aid station at Lock 5, Lock 7, and Lock 10.
        • Q. What time is the regular start time for the race and what time do you suggest arriving?
        • A. The non-competitive start (6-hour time limit) is at 7 AM. The competitive start (5-hour time limit) is at 8 AM. Both are 2014 Boston qualifiers. USATF course certification is pending. Cash prize and age-group award winners must start at 8 AM. (Exception: if all entrants 70 & over start at 7 AM as happened last year, then we'll use the 7 AM start for their awards.)
        • Q. When should I arrive?
        • A. Please arrive a half hour before your start. If you pick up your packet on Thursday or Saturday, then you don't have to stand in line on Sunday. If you don't, please allow 10 extra minutes to get your packet.
        • Q. Do you use timing chips?
        • A. No, we use the old-fashioned method of clicking your bib number into a Time Machine electronic time recorder, wired to a computer for instantaneous results.
        • Q. What about parking?
        • A. We only have 150 spaces at Fletcher's Cove's riverside parking area, and we want to leave some spaces for other park users. Once we fill all the parking at Fletcher's Cove (maybe 7:15 AM), we will direct cars to turn right on Reservoir Road towards free on-street parking, 0.3 to 0.7 miles away. Please take our cab or car-pool to minimize parking delays.

  • Support for Boston Marathon bombing victims
  • The board of directors of Safety And Health Foundation agreed on April 16 to donate $1,000 to The One Fund Boston, Inc., established by Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick and Boston mayor Thomas Menino to assist the victims of the bombing at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon.
  • We will have large pads of paper at packet pick-up and post-race so you can write words of comfort and support to the victims. We will send those signed pages to The One Fund Boston along with our donation.
  • You also may wish to donate to The One Fund Boston.
  • Breaking News
For 50-State Marathoners or anyone others who want to start in Maryland (about 20 MD STARTERS), here is more information.

    FOR MD STARTERS ONLY:

    1. Please meet at Lock 5 on Sunday, May 5, by 6:45 AM | MAP
We now provide Red Top Taxi service for $2.00 (formerly $10.00) from Key Bridge Marriott to Lock 5 at 6:00 AM.
Please register for the taxi service in advance.

    2. Lock 5 is accessible easily from eastbound Clara Barton Parkway, and with difficulty from westbound Clara Barton Parkway.
The best approach is to get someone to drop you off from the westbound Clara Barton Parkway, then you walk across Clara Barton Parkway to Lock 5.
Note: Lock 5 is NOT marked with a sign.
The landmark is a spiral ramp over Clara Barton Parkway that lands at Lock 5, to the only bridge OVER Clara Barton Parkway, about one mile west of Chain Bridge
You can also park at Lock 6, which is marked with a sign on eastbound Clara Barton Parkway.
From the parking area at Lock 6, the walk eastbound to Lock 5 is only about 200 meters.
    3. Our associate race director will meet you at Lock 5 at 6:45 AM.
She will have bib numbers and safety pins for all MD STARTERS who didn't pick up their packets on Saturday, May 4.
If you're a MD STARTER arriving on Sunday, DON'T go to Fletcher's Cove first.
Please go directly to Lock 5.
We will have your race t-shirt and individually-numbered goodie bag at the finish line so you don't have to carry it during the race.
    4. We have one portable toilet at Lock 5, plus National Park Service provides permanent toilets for men and women
    5. Walk across the small bridge to Milestone 5. | Map of Milestone 5
    6. Face eastward, toward Fletcher's Cove.
    7. We will synchronize by cell phone so that MD STARTERS and 7:00 AM starters at Fletcher's Cove go off simultaneously. (Note -- Not 6:50 AM any more -- it's 7:00 AM like everyone else.)
    8. At the whistle, run eastward for about 1500 meters. Cross under Chain Bridge.
Stay right. The MD STARTER turnaround is about 20 meters east of Chain Bridge.
    9. Turn around left at the cone where the volunteer holds the sign "MD STARTER TURNAROUND).
Merge into the regular starters, and from there on, everyone runs the same course.
