Leaving at 2 am from his home in Williamsburg VA, John Piggott drove through a night-long downpour, en route to the 2nd Annual Potomac River Run Marathon & Half Marathon, directed by Arlington Cooperation Foundation and Greater Washington Sports Alliance Piggott won the 2004 inaugural edition of the race and hoped to do it again this year.
The rain continued unabated as he and other runners from 23 states and China arrived shortly after 6 am for registration. Then, as the first group of runners -- the "Early Birds -- toed the line for the 6:30 am split start, the weather smiled and the rain stopped.
When the rain broke, World Laughter Leader Scotty Scott led the assembled group in a laughing warm-up to celebrate World Laughter Day, and at 7:00 am, after the National Anthem, the race director blew a New Year's Eve horn, and two hundred marathoners and half marathoners started with a hoot.
Piggott didn't waste any time breaking free from the pack, outdistancing even half-marathon leader John Kevin Temple of Chicago IL. Before long, Piggott even caught the Early Birds, making the turnaround in 1:18.
By the time he finished in 2:40:47, the rain was gone, the sun was peeking from behind the clouds, and the crowd at the finish erupted in applause -- and laughter, because the day turned out beautiful.
Patrick Dean Hopewell of Florence (Y'all!) SC took second in 3:02:19 and donated his $150 prize. Thomas Francis Jensen of Oakton VA gleefully accepted his $100 prize - 3:15:20 is not bad for 41 years old.
Among the women, Ellen Komesarook of Gaithersburg MD stayed ahead of Amanda Michelle Light of Fairfax VA, winning in 3:23:40 to earn $250 while Amanda brought to light a 3:27:46 finish and $150. Shannon Wyont of Florence SC took third in 3:31:22, good for $100.
Temple kept a steady pace to win the half-marathon in 1:20:10, ahead of Alexandria deputy sheriff Patrick Griffith, second in 1:25:51, at 60 a world-class geezerjock.
Jessica Reilly of Atlanta GA took the women's division in 1:38:26, finishing 10th overall.
Out on the course, five charities and three running clubs partnered in a unique co-operative to make the race truly enjoyable. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Team CF ran the first water station, followed by Diabetes Action Research & Education Foundation, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Big Brothers Big Sisters, YPK, and Northern Virginia Running Club. Potomac Valley Track Club, Chesapeake Bay Running Club, TJ Road Runners, and Asha for Education worked the race, and a team of Certified Laughter Leaders fluttered around the finish line in funny hats to make the spirit bright. Special Olympics DC and Capital Hospice were also beneficiaries.
Sponsors included Georgetown Running Company, who donated 50 $20 gift certificate -- $1,000 worth -- and The Christopher Companies, E*TRADE Financial, Ferris Baker Watts, The Mike Webb Team of RE/MAX Allegiance, Big Wheel Bikes, and Kiehl's Since 1951. Falls Road Running Store, Glory Days Grill, Gold's Gym, Hard Times Café, Metro 29 Diner, and Whole Foods all donated gift certificates. Honest Tea, Mario's Pizza House, Whole Foods, and XS Energy Drink all donated food for the post-race picnic. Courtyard By Marriott hosted the pre-race College of Running featuring Drs. Bernard Etherly, Bea Carson, and Gabe Mirkin; champion runners Michael Wardian and Ben Cooke; and Laughter Leader Scotty Scott, and the pre-race dinner, honoring 5-time Olympic Trials Marathoner Darrell General. Sunny's Executive Sedans provided shuttle service to and from the race. BearCom provided Nextel Direct Connect phones to keep all the Spirit Stations in touch throughout the race. Kiehl's donated two $250-value goodie bags to the first finisher over 4 hours -- Lee Moore of Yorktown VA -- the first finisher over 5 hours -- Brenda Murphy of Taylor MI, who also won the 40-49 women's age group.
By picnic time, the sky was clear and blue -- we laughed off the rain!
The race was also the first Presidential Partner event of National Fitness Month, and the goodie bags included many fitness-related items, including Geezerjock Magazine, MetroSports, and Nolan Ryan's Fitness Guide.
Among Arlington runners, Robert Toonkel, 30, was 17th in 3:36:13 following by Old Dominion 100 Miler winner John David Powell, 52 , who ran 24th in 3:39:53 .
Cynthia Hens, 38 , was thrilled to run 3:50:47 to win the 30-39 age group, 4th among women.
The most moving moment, however, was when Tara Claeys, 37, finished in 4:11:11 , 13th among women. Her parents and other family members came to watch her finish after themselves running the Washington DC Cassidy & Pinkard 5K Race For Hope by Brain Tumor Society, in memory of her late brother.
In the half, Nancy Sirivanakarn, 28 , was 10th woman in 1:51:53 , and Will H. Kimbrough, 24 , was 33rd man in 1:57:46 .
Two ambulances were on site, but the day's entire medical response was just one band-aid for a toe blister.
The results are now OFFICIAL and FINAL. Actual* times are the gun time for the 7:00 starters (it only took 5 seconds to cross the starting line) and the gun time plus exactly 32 minutes for the Early Birds. Early Birds don't count for awards.
All data currently available is included in the results below. Please send any additions or corrections. RUNNING PEOPLE: ALEXANDRIA DEPUTY SHERIFF TARGETS POTOMAC RIVER RUN HALF-MARATHON
by Laurie Lee
Pat Griffith of Alexandria VA has undoubtedly mastered the art of reversing the aging process. At age 60, he likes winning and keeps winning his age group. Living only a mile from the PRR course, he is more than familiar with the terrain. He runs the trail every day. After nine hours of sleep, he will be ready to take on the half marathon. As a frequent top finisher, he enjoys sharing his prizes so he often invites friends from the running community to join him for dinner with a prize from one of the restaurant sponsors.
Roxane Sismandis of Washington DC is attracted to the PRR because of its small size. Her favorite part of the half marathon is any place along the river. With a steady schedule of a variety of runs 4 to 5 times a week, totalling about 30-45 miles, her reward might be dark chocolate. She always looks forward to her runs as “the joy of her day.”
Nancy Sirivanakarn of Arlington VA runs four times a week with Steve Campbell, a runner in her neighborhood she met at last year’s PRR. Her races provide a delightful way to meet runner companions. Before a race, she meditates and says a prayer that everyone has a good experience. She stays inspired by knowing that she will feel elated after each race.
John Bloomfield of Washington DC has run the PRR course many times and enjoys the fact the marathon is low key and especially scenic. He stays motivated by keeping a log of his running mileage (about 30) and also records how he felt during the run.
Miguel Gomez of Alexandria VA finds the turn around point the best, most beautiful part of PRR Marathon. He trains six days a week, 45-50 miles, with long runs at Carderock on the C & O Canal up to 20 miles. He loads up on carbs, cutting back on protein, a week before the Marathon. Running is a meditative state, a zone especially on the long runs.
When Edward Green of Washington DC is not travelling to scuba dive, he is running long distances like the PRR Marathon. He will run 5 to 6 days a week, 50 miles total, often with his trainer Brian Bowles. Before the marathon, he will make sure he has stretched and clamped his squeeze-ems on his shoelaces. He will keep inspired by admiring the female runners ahead of him.
Cynthia Hens of Arlington VA looks forward to the hilly marathon like the PRR early in the year. Longer, harder workouts are good training. The Belle Haven course is most familiar to her since she runs there every Thursday and often does races there on Saturday or Sunday with the DCRRC. The night before the marathon, she will make cookies with rice flour and top them with jelly since she cannot eat wheat. With 8 hours of sleep and having trained 65 miles a week, she will try to better her time of 3:37. The book “Marathon and Beyond” as well as the running magazines help keep her inspired
When the Pittsburgh Marathon was cancelled,
Joseph Coblentz of Silver Spring MD jumped at the opportunity to enter the PRR Marathon.
He likes all the races Race Director Jay Wind organizes.
The spirit stations are his favorite part of the course,
in particular the one at the halfway mark not far from the bridge.
He trains using a method developed by New Zealand coach Arthur Lydiard.
The method features steady, long runs, periodic changing, running every day with the same effort,
hill training and faster running. Before the marathon, he makes a point to keep moving
until the race begins to keep his body temperature up.
He practices visualization to keep motivated and will even visualize what may go wrong during the race
and what he will do if it does.
