Dean Shulman was our friend and a founder of Safety And Health Foundation before his untimely death five yars ago. Wendy Martinez was a well-known runner who ran our half marathon in 2015 and continued to progress as a runner until Wednesday, September 19, when she was killed by an attacker while running near Logan Circle. Call 703-524-6400, and they will be delighted to help you We offer three convenient packet pick-ups: Packet Assembly: Help us assemble bib numbers and goodie bags, and get your bib number, t-shirt, and goodie bag early on Thursday, September 27, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Walter Reed Community Center, 2909 16th Street South, Arlington VA 22204 (703-228-0946). Park free in front or behind the building Pre-race packet pickup: Friday, September 28, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Pacers Running Store, 3100 Clarendon Boulevard, Arlington VA, across street from Clarendon Metro. Park free for 90 minutes underneath Trader Joe's (enter parking area at 1200 North Garfield Street), Then go upstairs to get your parking coupon validated. Buy something while you're there! Race-day packet pickup: Saturday, September 29, 7:15 AM to 8:45 AM -- on-site at Fletcher's Cove, 4940 Canal Road NW, Washington DC 20007, two miles west of Key Bridge, one mile east of Chain Bridge. From the east (Georgetown), arrive via Canal Road. Follow the stone wall from Key Bridge to the first break in the wall, also the first stoplight west of Foxhall Road. Enter to the left down a ramp to free parking for 85 cars. Please do not park in front of the big white Abner Cloud House, a national historical site, open to the public as a museum after 12:00 noon on Saturdays. Once the upper parking lot is full stay to your right and enter the tunnel that goes under the canal and towpath and brings you to free parking for about 200 cars. If you drive from the west -- past Chain Bridge on Canal Road -- the hairpin turn down to Fletcher's Cove is dangerous. Instead, turn left at the stoplight to go up Reservoir Road for free parking there, or make a safe U-turn, go back down to Canal Road, and cross into the ramp down to Fletcher's Cove. U.S. Park Police serve and protect at that intersection. Simultaneous with our race is a Park Run 5K, starting at 9:00 AM and heading east -- the opposite direction -- unrelated to our marathon, but they do occupy some parking spaces If all available parking is taken, you can find more free parking up Reservoir Road at The River School, on W Street, Bending Lane, Hutchins Place, or Macarthur Boulevard. If you drive to the race, please lock your personal belongings in your car. If you signed up to take our pre-paid Red Top Cab from Key Bridge Marriott, 1401 Lee Highway, Arlington VA 22204, departing at 7:00 AM, arriving at Fletcher's Cove around 7:20 AM, we send additional instructions to you. You may still sign up for Red Top Cab via our web page www.safetyandhealthfoundation.org/marathon/index2.php or at pre-race packet pick-up. Round trip is $15.00 If you take the cab or other means of transportation, we offer secure storage of personal belongings behind the race-day registration desk. Please place your stuff in a white plastic bag, which we provide, or in your green goodie bag from ACE Physical Therapy, and please write your bib number on the outside of the bag. Your friends may register late during pre-race packet pick-up You may pick up someone else's bib number and packet if you bring along a signed note or a printed e-mail message from your friend If you want to change your start time or distance, you MUST inform the registrar when you pick up your bib number on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, but it's WAY better if you let us know now using the change form above. We also have a change chart on the timing table at the start / finish line. No, you can't run a 1:50 marathon. We'll know it's a half marathon. ;-) Please be sure to wear your bib number visibly on the front of your shirt at all times during the race, not on your back, not on your sleeve, and please do NOT remove the name tag at the bottom of your bib number -- we collect those tags at the finish line, that's how we score the race -- not using electronic chips. As quickly as possible after the 8:00 AM marathon finishers and the 9:00 AM half marathon finishers, we present awards, including $10 cards from Pacers Running Stores and Trader Joe's, $20 cards from Falls Road Running Store in Baltimore, really cool SHF seven-color-changing desk lamps (cats and kids love them), copies of my book about 3 marathon runners who must overcome great obstacles to run Marine Corps Marathon. If you want to buy an authorgraphed copy of the book to pick up at packet pick-up, please let me know (703-505-3567) ASAP so I can print a copy for you. It's an exciting story of love, devotion, betrayal, courage, and triumph with plenty of twists and turns and forays into quantum mechanics and theoretical astrophysics. See www.arlingtonsunrise.com for a preview -------- "To err is human but to really foul things up requires a computer." -- Generally attributed to Paul Ehrlich, American scientist (1926- ) Many of you wrote me to say that my link to 2018 Status of Entries was incorrect. Oops! Sorry about that! Here is the correct link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12AiB4V4B28_wfOA7bjLIggWAv9TCVrJvwdK11fAlM00/edit?usp=sharing One entrant asked: Q. Where will Carb Boom! energy gel be available? A. We have about 240 packets available at the check-in table at Fletcher's Cove, down the stairs from C&O Canal Towpath, so we have enough for one packet for everyone. Of the six flavors, we have five: Apple Cinnamon, Banana Peach, Pomegranate Grape, Raspberry, and Strawberry Kiwi. Alas, we don't have any packets of Boom!'s best-selling Vanilla Orange with 35 mg of caffeine. We will, however, have Dunkin' Donuts coffee at the check-in table, so if you're like me and you run better with caffeine, we've got you covered! Please dispose properly of the little tabs at the tops of the gel packets and the packets themselves -- and any gel packets you bring along -- please don't drop them onto the Towpath. I personally always run the course on foot after the race, and those little tabs are harder to pick up than cigarette butts -- which I also pick up when I scrub the venue! Thank you for your consideration. I also forgot to mention that we still have plenty of room at the table if you want to join us on Friday, September 28, at 6:30 PM at Cosi Restaurant, 1801 North Lynn Street, Arlington VA 22204, to hear Gib Leonard's twice-a-year progress report on Buy A Brick Foundation's work to build clinics, hospitals, and schools in Zimbabwe and to work with farmers to plant and harvest Artemisia annua, a native plant with powerful anti-malaria properties. See their web site at www.BuyABrickFoundation.org and photos at www.stompoutmalaria.com I also forgot to mention that our race day photographer, Charlie Milsop, is on site on Saturday taking photos of everyone, for sale a day or two after the race via his web site www.chessiephoto.com We look forward to welcoming you this week! Thank you, Jay Jacob Wind, director Safety And Health Foundation
