    MESSAGE TO PARTICIPANTS
  • Thank you for entering AESA ONE Abebe Bikila 5K, to be held Sunday, July 7, on the Anacostia River Walk trail on the eastern margin of RFK Stadium parking lots 7 and 8.
  • We are excited and very happy to bring this race to you, last year the first ever on the new Anacostia River Walk trail. We are delighted that you chose to run our race.

    SPONSORS

  • We are grateful to our sponsors:
  • AESA ONE -- providing t-shirts, soccer tickets, and cash prizes
    METRO
  • If you take Metro Orange or Blue Lines to Stadium-Armory, go up the excalator and turn right onto 19th Street. Turn right again at East Capitol Street and walk past DC Armory to the entrance to Parking Lot 8. Follow the sidewalk in Parking Lot 8 as far east as it goes.
  • Our start / finish are at parking lot level (NOT STREET LEVEL) under the East Capitol Street Whitney Young Bridge.
    PARKING
  • We have learned from RFK Stadium that parking will NOT be free on race day.
  • Parking in Lot 8 is $10, accessible off I-395 from the south and East Capitol Street - Independence Avenue from the east.
  • Parking in Lot 7 is also probably $10, but you may be able to find a free parking place near the playground off Oklahoma Avenue, since RFK Stadium provides free parking for the public playground.
  • Free parking is available at Langston Golf Course, Eastern High School, and many neighborhood streets. Please obey any signs that say "No Parking On Event Days."
    TOILETS
  • Portable toilets are located about 400 meters from the start in the middle of Lot 7. We don't have any portable toilets near the start / finish. Please plan accordingly.
    MAPS

    CHECK-IN ON RACE DAY
  • When you arrive, we will have three tables with bib numbers, t-shirts, and safety pins
  • One table for pre-entered MEN alphabetically by last name
  • One table for pre-entered WOMEN alphabetically by last name
  • One table for race-day registration ($40)
  • Your bib number serves as a ticket for the championship soccer game
    TIMING
  • NOTE: We use manual timing, not electronic timing. No chips or ankle-bands. You MUST wear your bib number visibly on the front of your shirt during the race and especially at the finish so we can score you properly. We must know your correct age to score you properly. Please look at the sticker on your bib number to assure that your name, gender, age, and city are correct, and please inform the registrar of any corrections.
    POSSIBLE SPLIT START
  • If we have more than 200 entrants, for safety on the narrow trail, we MAY split the event into two races, a men's race starting at 4:00 PM or a few minutes earlier if everyone is ready to go, and a women's race starting a few minutes later.
  • Thus you will know your competition!
    COURSE
  • Our course is entirely flat -- even flatter than Hains Point or C&O Canal Towpath -- all paved, no street crossings.
  • We start under Whitney Young Bridge facing north.
  • We stay on the right-hand side of the trail and run north to Benning Road.
  • There, we take a left, then another quick left to circle a small triangle of land.
  • Then we turn right, back onto Anacostia River Walk going south.
  • Running southbound, we pass the start line under Whitney Young Bridge and continue to the first split-rail fence where construction begins.
  • Stay to your right and turn around left at the cone and the marshal.
  • Continue on your right northbound.
  • Pass the start / finish under Whitney Young Bridge again.
  • Continue north to Benning Road.
  • Turn left and left again at the triangle, then right onto Anacostia River Walk.
  • Run south to the finish line under Whitney Young Bridge.
  • We have markers at each mile (1, 2, 3).
  • Since the course starts and ends at its midpoint, you pass the midpoint aid station with water twice during the race.
    NO CHEATING, PLEASE
  • We have course marshals with clipboards at the north end at Benning Road, the south end at the split-rail fence, and again at the north end at Benning Road, They will record the bib numbers of the leading male and female runners. To be eligible for an award -- cash or gift certificate -- you MUST run the entire course, and you MUST be listed on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd clipboards. Therefore, do not obscure your bib number with another short or pin it to the side of your shorts. You MUST wear it visibly on the front of your shirt.
    WE DISCOURAGE HEADPHONES
  • We discourage the use of headphones, cell phones, or other portable listening devices during the competition.
  • Our course marshals must be able to communicate the turns to you, and they must be able to ask you to show your bib number at the turns. Feel free to warm up before the race or cool down after the race wearing headphones, but please do not wear them during the competition.
    CASH AWARDS
  • AESA ONE intends to award the cash prizes inside RFK Stadium itself, shortly before the 6:00 PM soccer game. Currently, the plan is $3000 each to the first place man and women, $1500 each to the second place man and woman, $500 each to the third place man and woman. AESA ONE plans to have a golf cart or and SUV to drive the top 3 men and women into RFK Stadium, amidst the cherring of 20,000 soccer fans. AESA ONE would like the top 3 M/F to take a victory lap around the inside of RFK Stadium, carrying their national flags. Please, if you hope to finish among the top 3 men and women, bring your national flag so you can wear it when you take your victory lap inside RFK Stadium.
    OTHER AWARDS
  • For the top 3 males / females in each age-group 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & over, we shall present $25 gift certificates from Georgetown Running Company (3401 M Street NW, Washington DC 202-337-8626) immediately after your race. No need to wait for the 6:00 PM soccer game.
    VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
  • If you have a family member or friend who can assist us with the event, please write or call, or check in with one of the registrars or with me before the race. We have plenty to do, from check-in, course marshal, results, food service, and clean-up.
    HOT WEATHER ALERT
  • We expect temperatures in the 90s, maybe even over 100F.
  • Please dress lightly, with light-colored or white clothing.
  • Do not wear black, as it absorbs heat.
  • If you take a warm-up run before the race, splash yourself with water -- especially over your head -- right before the race to cool you at the surface.
  • Drink plenty of fluids a few hours before the race, but not right before so you don't need the bathroom.
  • If you feel tired or woozy, please stop and walk.
  • We don't want anyone to get sick or injured from the heat.
  • Wear sunscreen if your need it.
  • Please DO wear shoes that protect you from hot pavement.
  • Please be aware that our course is NOT shady -- you run in the open alongside Anacostia River, where the temperature is slightly cooler than other urban areas, but the trees recently planted on Anacostia River Walk are not tall enough to provide any shade whatsoever.
  • Please, no participants under the age of 10
  • Participants over 65 must show their doctor's authorization that they are medically and physically fit to run and have no other health issues
  • All participants must sign a dated consent form before starting the race stating that they are 100% running on their own responsibility and at their own risk
    CONTACT WITH QUESTIONS
