Come out to watch your favorite runner finish, or watch the race at any of these accessible locations: Spectator access: o Start / finish under Key Bridge at C&O Canal Milestone 1 o Fletcher's Cove - Aid station & spectator access - near C&O Canal Milestone 3, accessible from Canal Road both east and west. Be cautious when turning into the steep driveway. Everyone is welcome to the post-race happy hour for food and drink specials. We invite your friends and family to assist us on the race course. Volunteers: Please write us at fathersday8K@gmail.com if you want to volunteer. Weather: Stay tuned to the local weather before the race. We run the race in the evening so the sun is low and the temperatures have a chance to fall, but this is still a summer race. We encourage all participants to hydrate properly and run only if you are healthy enough to participate. The race will be held rain or shine, but the organizers may delay the start up to an hour if a thunderstorm is passing through. In case of thunderstorms, U.S. Park Police makes the final decision on whether events can be held on National Park Service property. The race will not be cancelled and refunds will not be given, but participants will still receive their t-shirts and are invited to the post-race happy hour where awards will be raffled off. In case of rain, allow extra time for transportation. Start Line: Walk up the stairs to the start line at about 6:20 PM. We play the National Anthem at 6:24 PM, followed by introduction of our sponsors and pre-race instructions. We whistle the start at 6:30 PM. We time the race the old-fashioned way, recording time using a printing stopwatch (www.timemachine.org) and collecting the name tags at the bottom of your bib number. Please run with your bib number on the front of your shirt, not covered or obscured, and please leave the name tag intact at the bottom of your bib number. After you finish, we collect those name tags to ascertain the order of finish. Please seed yourself close to the start or farther back. All finish times are based on the clock, so if you expect to win an award, seed yourself closer to the start line. Teams: We have about a dozen each of father-son and father-daughter teams. Scores are based on SUM(Father's Place + Child's Place), so a team with places 2 + 3 = 5 wins against against a team with places 1 + 6 = 7. Ties, for instance 2+3=5 and 1+4=5, will be broken based on total time. A father may score on both a father-son team and a father-daughter team, and we have two such teams. Results & Awards: We print and post results immediately after the race, and we present awards around 7:45 PM. Awards are by gender and 10-year age group - 9 &under, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80 & over. In the DC area, we are blessed with some of the top runners in the country 80+ and even 90+. A hearty cheer for them!
